When Rock Ruled The Charts (MTV Part 1) – EP215

Remember when rock ruled the charts and you could hear and see it everywhere? In this on-going series, we explore a single date in history to explore the Billboard album charts and take a look at what rock albums were tearing up the charts. In Part 1 of this 2 part episode, we look at August 1, 1981 – the day MTV launched.

A Little MTV History:

MTV (Music Television) first launched in 1981 and it was not an easy hill to climb. They had problems getting it into homes across the US, and the record labels not only did not have very many videos to give them, but they wanted to charge them for the videos they did have. At the time MTV launched, radio ruled the charts and in part 1, we look at what the charts looked like before MTV had their impact. Next week, we will take a look at how 4 years of MTV affected the music charts.
