Judas Priest Top 10 – EP099

Episode Description:

Judas Priest top 10 songs is what this episode is all about. Sonny and I get into why we love Judas Priest and play some of our favorites. I also review the Judas Priest concert I recently attended here in my town.

What’s The Story?

Judas Priest is easily one of my top 10 favorite bands of all time. They were in my earliest discoveries as I started to form my obsession with hard rock and heavy metal. I got into British Steel and Screaming For Vengeance almost at the same exact time in high school. I saw them at a venue two hours outside my hometown on the World Vengeance tour in February of ‘83. It was my second big concert that I attended. The Australian band Heaven opened up and I was right on the barrier for the whole thing. After seeing the recent Firepower Tour hit my town, it seemed like a great time to reminisce and talk about some of our favorite Judas Priest tunes. Crank It Up!

  1. Great bands, great picks, great episode. I guess Growin’ Up Rock is just grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreat!

  2. Per your “six degrees of separation” between Lita Ford and KISS discussion, the more direct route from Lita is through Kim Fowley, who co-wrote “Do You Love Me?” and “King of the Nighttime World.”

    1. Phil, this is great. Thanks for sharing. We suspected that Kim Fowley might have had something to do with the introduction of the Runaways and Kiss. I’m sure this is why Lita had Gene come out and Check out VH.

  3. Judas Priest is amazing! One of my favorite bands of all time. Great picks.

    1. Awesome! One of my top 10 bands of all time. Thanks for listening. Glad you enjoyed.

Just finished listening to the Priest episode and enjoyed it very much, liked your picks!
Sonny’s…eh….”Locked In” I think was his number one. Wow…I am not a Turbo hater, like the title track and a few
others but that one would not even come close to making a list for me. To each his own. The mid to late
80’s hard rock and some metal got a little to much hair spray for me.

You mentioned a couple of times briefly about Priest gettting heavier and maybe losing you, and I totally
agree, feel the exact same way. It was after Turbo if I can place it in a time line. and when they brought Scott Travis in.

Part of it was the guitar tone after Turbo. It almost got to fuzzy or away from the traditonal sound they had in the early
80’s through Defender. They also got away from having that signature identifiable riff /melodies for they’re songs ,examples:
Breaking the Law,Grinder,You”ve Got Another Thing Coming,Rock Hard Ride Free and etc…..

The big thing I think for me was/is Scott Travis. Not that he is a bad drummer by any means, but I feel thats
where it changes the most. He plays more of a speed/thrash/ double bass type kick style and the guitars got away form the “riffs”
to more of a “chuga chuga” type playing. To be honest “Firepower” is the first one since the 80’s stuff that I have really listnened
    to and enjoyed.

You’ve Got Another Thing Coming has lost it’s luster for me during the Travis era. He does not play it in the traditional
manner and for me changes the dynamic of the song. You can hear/see he throws a tom tom into the mix. Examples below:

    Travis

    Holland

The guys from the Classic Rock Album by Album podcast have mentioned Painkiller and raved about it.
I think the first and last time I listened to that, is when it was released 20 some years ago

It would be hard to pick a top 10 of Priest, but I liked your picked from most era’s of the band.
I would have to go with tracks from Hell Bent, British Steel, Screamin and Defenders.

It would be interesting to here then rerecord some of the old stuff with the newer technology and
production skills but keep it close to the original as possible.

    1. Hey Man, Thanks for listening. Glad you dug the episode. Thanks for sharing your story and the links. I get exactly what your saying about Scott Travis.
