Falling Short Of Number One – EP115

No one likes falling short of number one. “If you ain’t first, you’re last” is a Ricky Bobby quote that will live forever.  We aren’t sure that this quote is accurate for the music business. The Billboard 100 has ninety-nine other places you can be and you’re just fine.  On this episode, we celebrate the 80s and look at some of the guitar-driven rock hits during the decade.

Being #1 is important in life.  It defines you as a winner. Although, there were rock/hard rock bands that reached #1 on the Billboard 100 in the 80s, many were ballads.  On this episode, we explore all the 80s songs (that we consider guitar-driven rock, which at times is not easy to agree on), that charted on the Hot 100 but failed to reach #1…..and as you probably guessed, our opinions vary on several of the choices.  So, bring on your inner “Poindexter” and enjoy this stat ridden episode. We even made a Spotify playlist for you called Falling Short of #1

  1. Excellent episode! Hollywood is numbers crazy and needs to calm down. By the way, I totally love that you guys actually do good editing on the episode. Not every podcast does that.

    1. Thanks and YES!! Hollywood is numbers crazy and just crazy in general. That unfortunately is how he actually calms down – WHAT A NERD!!Thanks for listening and noticing we take a lot of pride in our sound and editing quality for what we can control. This episode was completely ALL HOLLYWOOD, from the idea to the editing. I just jumped on and followed his directing. LOL

  2. I love numbers and I loved this episode. It’s stuff like the trivia, diamond albums, unique stuff like the failure episode that keeps me interested AND YOU GUYS NEVER MISS A WEEK! Hats off to ya, keep up the great work.

    1. Thanks for listening. We appreciate the feedback. It keeps us interested as well, so we are glad it is doing the same for our listeners.

  3. Best topics, best interviews, best sounding, best music and great hosts, Growin’ Up Rock is worth a listen. This episode especially (Failure to reach #1) involved some serious research. Who is doing all this number crunching? LMAO. My head was spinning.

    1. Hey Angie – Thanks So much!! You Rule! Yep – Sonny is a bit OCD and loves Numbers – LOL
We hope you’ll continue to listen and share with any and all of your rock n roll friends that appreciate guitar driven rock n roll.

  4. Great episode guys, love these types and your discussions and disagreements! Still not sure if I caught on to the criteria and requirements quite yet. Went back and listened to the part again. AC/DC For Those About To Rock single peaked at 4 per Wiki. Seems like that would fall in there as far as not making it to number one and guitar driven rock., correct? Not complaining, just trying to understand. Anyways great episode, but have to disagree with DLR Just Like Paradise. Not one of my fav’s and definitely would never make a playlist of his stuff. He had the whole thing rolling with Eat Em Smile ,carrying on that big VH part hard rock stuff and killed that momentum with Skyscraper. It has its moments but that was the beginning of the end of his solo career . But when I first heard that single and video it was like …ugh. Oh well, thanks again for what you guys do!

    1. Joel, You may have found a discrepancy in Hollywood’s number crunching – LOL -You understand the criteria correctly, So Sonny can respond to this one. Thanks for listening, and I agree with you on the DLR, but Just like Paradise as I explained aged pretty well for me so I like it better now than I did, but if I was putting together a playlist of DLR, You know, I going with the rock stuff including stuff off that DLR band CD which I think is awesome. That record with John 5 is way underrated.

      1. Maybe I was a little hard on “Paradise”. Speaking of DLR band album. You might want to checkout the Dave and Dave Unchained Episode where they break that one down. Its pretty good, link attached at bottom. I am almost ashamed to admit this, being a huge VH and Roth guy, but I have never listened to it. I remember when it came out in 1998 and seeing it in the store. Roth was pretty much sliding down in the rock and heavy scene along with that whole genre. I just bypassed it, looking at the cover ,being kinda of cheesy, and Filthy Little mouth was so so. But after hearing that episode I totally regret it. Gonna jump on it soon.

        1. Joel – Spot on! I agree with where you are coming from and I was in that same boat. I did enjoy A Little Is Not Enough. FLM was not good and it was not until much later that I started to appreciate some of the material on Skyscraper. I will check out the two Dave’s. I listen to them once in a while. I often thank about should I doing my own VH podcast one day. I am surprised there are not more of them out there.

          1. The two Daves break down the whole Roth VH thing on they’re latest podcast. I think you doing a VH podcast is an excellent idea. Yeah, I know of one other called “Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Van Halen” ,and to me it’s kinda meh! Was not impressed. I am pretty selective what music podcasts I pay attention to. Some hosts are just painful to listen to. It’s like hearing Beavis and Butthead doing commentary or folks just enjoy hearing themselves speak. Just like Al Greene said “Talking Loud and Saying Nothing”. Speaking of doing a podcast, it’s something I have been contemplating on diving into. I am pretty sure you mentioned at the latest Rock and Podcast event that some put on a seminar about getting into it and learning how or that they do a podcast about it. I would definitely be interested in that. Giving me some insight on “how to”. I have some ideas on themes or what I want in a podcast but need direction and have questions. Thanks .
