In this episode, we discuss songs that were considered part of a band’s catalog, but written by a songwriter not in the band. We are not really talking about cover songs in the normal sense of the word, but songs that were identified with the band or artist that performed it.
The majority of hard rock and metal bands in the 80s wrote their own tunes, but oftentimes labels urged bands to bring in an outside songwriter to help them create a single or help them understand how to write a song. Sometimes a label or producer would suggest a band using a virtually unknown song that might have been released with no success and have a new band re-cut the song.
