Top 5 Van Halen Songs Livecast – BONUS

Did someone say Van Halen? We are giving you our Top 5 David Lee Roth and Top 5 Sammy Hagar era Van Halen songs. In a re-broadcast of a Livecast we did on May 17th, 2020, we invite our special guest, drummer and author of “START WITH A DREAM: A Drummer’s Journey from Rock & Roll to T.V. to Broadway,” Joey Cassata to square off in our top 5 Van Halen debate.

All of us love Van Halen. Some of us prefer the Sammy Hagar version of the band, and some of us prefer the David Lee Roth version. That being said, all of us agree there are great Van Halen songs to be heard on both sides of the fence. We have fun going back and forth on the pros and cons of each singer, but in the end, we have three very different, but very good top 5 lists for each of the eras.

  1. All 3 lists were great. Have to say i’m more a Van Hagar vs Van Halen fan. Sammy is my guy and my opinion Dave is overrated.

    1. Thanks for listening and thanks for sharing your thoughts. I think perhaps Dave may seem so overrated, because for that time period (78 – 84), he became so influential as a frontman. Nobody was hurrying to imitate Sammy, but the amount of imitators doing the Dave thing was endless. Yes, to me Sammy is a better overall singer, but being a frontman is about so much more, and Dave’s voice fit the band at that time. Besides, had it not been for Dave you most likely would have never heard of Van Halen the band, because according to sources he was the driving force of the band in the early years. Me personally, I’ve always been an Eddie guy. Thanks again dude!
